How to Recover from a Running Injury


Hey guys, Dr. Axe here. Founder of draxe.com,
doctor of functional medicine. Today I want to talk to you about how to overcome a running
injury or athletic injury. Whether you’re a runner or a soccer player or basketball
player, any type of athlete, you’ve had an injury that has been running or jumping related,
there are specific things you absolutely want to do to overcome that injury and to start
to heal very quickly. And the first thing you want to do is rest the area, and you want
to actually start doing exercise that is non impactful. Typically the best things to do, especially
if you’re a runner, are to start cycling and swimming. Cycling and swimming, you’re going
to still be working your lungs, you’re going to be working larger muscle groups like your
legs. So it’s going to help your body stay in shape at the very same time increasing
circulation into that area, helping you heal faster. So again, if you’re not able to run
right now, start swimming and start cycling on a good spin bike or do spin classes. That’s
the first thing you want to do when you’re overcoming a running injury once that area
feels well enough for you to start being active again. Step number two is you’ve got to change your
diet. You’ve got to start eating anti-inflammatory foods, things that are high in omega-3 fats
like wild cut salmon, grass fed beef, and chia seeds. Also you want to start consuming
anti-inflammatory herbs like turmeric, and ginger are some of the best, they’re fantastic.
And then also, in general, just getting more fruits and vegetables in your diet. And in
terms of a liquid coconut water has a lot of potassium that can actually help eliminate
toxins in your system, can help heal an area that’s injured from a running injury. The next step and thing you want to do from
a running injury is start strengthening your muscles. And one of the best things to do
is to do band exercises. You can do bands, those are very non-impactful, and they actually
help your body work through a full range of motion. So start using bands both upper and
lower body, doing lower body exercises. One of the next steps I’d do, step four, is
get some soft tissue work done, and go and find a good quality athletic trainer, massage
or massage therapist. Somebody that can really go out, and look at your body, feel for different
knots or muscular or physical imbalances. It could be possible that you have a muscular
imbalance or a muscle spasm somewhere that’s causing your body to run out of balance. Imagine
this as well, lets say you have a short leg, and you’re running all the time, it’s like
you’re putting extra stress on one joint more than the others over, and over, and over again.
And that’s when you may even consider seeing someone like a chiropractor. But again seeing a nature holistic physician
whether it would be an athletic trainer, massage therapist, a chiropractor, they can really
look at your physical structure, and your musculature, and help balance things out. And then when you start running again, start
running on softer surfaces, and work your way up slowly. A lot of times we increase
our mileage too fast, that can cause a running injury. And so what you want to start doing
is just increasing 10% a week over time in your running volume or athletic volume or
whatever you’re doing. And I’ll tell you, you can actually trust me on a lot of this,
because not only am I a physician, I’m a former triathlete, runner, swimmer, and cyclist.
So I feel your pain when it comes to running injuries. I’ve had them before, I’ve rehabbed
myself, thousands of patients as well in doing so. So those are my top tips for how to helping
you overcome your running injuries fast.

For the warmth. -Yeah, for warmth.
-Yeah. But that’s good. It comes
with that. So that’s in there. And then these, when you pull
these out, be careful because they’ll light
right away. -Holy!
-It’s a flare, okay? There’s two of those.
[ Blows ] And it’s gonna come with
a rain poncho, as well. And if you need to — That’s
what I was saying, with the CO2. Yeah.
See, that’s working. Good. Okay. -If you need to inflate —
-How do they fit all this? -Huh?
-How does that all fit in there? That’s what I’m saying
about this Swiss ingenuity. They, like —
They engineer it that way so it’s —
so it double-vacuums it. -Yeah.
-Yeah, they compress it down. But once it pops,
it’s got, you know — So, there’s a full set
in there. And that’s gonna come with
everything you need like, you know, bandages…
What?! …a spare alcohol,
and sudoku. But that’s, like, if
you’re on the slope and you’re, like, stuck. Right. Extra jacket. And then — Yeah. There’s also a transport if you
want, but you got to be careful. There’s a safety button
on the top of that. Yeah?
And you’re gonna want to keep that pulled. And that’s just for safety. [ Air rushes ] Whoop! All right. [ Laughs ] -Sorry about that.
-No, that’s awesome! So, that’s the plastic that I
was talking about that pops out. -Holy cow!
-So, yeah. I’d like to be able to give it
to you, but just be careful. -Well, you know —
-Oh, look. It gives you eggs, too. That’s for, like,
protein on the slopes. Yeah.
-What? -Yeah.
-Those are real eggs? Those are real eggs. That’s amazing. -How the heck?

Aaron is eating a hot dog when… He starts choking! If you see someone choking, the first step is to determine how serious it is. Choking happens when someone is not able to breathe due to a fully or partially obstructed windpipe or throat. It will often happen when food gets lodged when swallowing. If you think someone is choking, ask them: ‘Are you choking?’ If they can reply, it means their throat is only partially blocked. They should be able to clear it on their own by coughing. However, if they cannot reply, cry, cough or breathe, then it means that their throat is fully blocked. They need your help. Have the person bend forwards and stand behind them. Use the heel of your hand, the area between the palm and the wrist, to hit them firmly between the shoulder blades up to five times. This creates a strong vibration which can dislodge the food. If they are still choking, give up to five abdominal thrusts. This also known as the Heimlich Maneuver. Do not try the Heimlich manoeuvre on a baby under 1 year old or pregnant women, as it can be dangerous to them. Otherwise, stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist and bend them forwards. Make a fist with one hand and place it right above their belly button. Put your other hand on top of your fist. Then, pull sharply inwards and upwards up to five times. If the person is still choking after doing five back blows and five abdominal thrusts, call 999 or your local emergency number. Continue doing five back blows and five abdominal thrusts until help arrives or until their throat has been cleared. To recap, if you think someone is choking, first ask: “are you choking?”. If they are, give up to 5 back flows and then 5 abdominal thrusts. If they are still choking, all 999 and continue alternating back blows and abdominal thrusts until help arrives. You tripped, you fell, you got a cut, and
now you need to figure out how to treat it. My name is Beverly Bitterman, A. R. N. P.,
Health and Wellness consultant and I’m here to give you some basic steps for how to do
that. The first thing that you want to make sure that you do, if you have a cut, is to
make sure it’s clean and dry and that the bleeding gets stopped. So, I would do, say,
let’s pretend the cut is on your arm, I would take the arm, the person, over to the sink
and run some warm water on it. Just let the water flow over the cut to make sure it’s
clean and the area around it is clean. If it’s a child, maybe outside playing or you
were in the garden and you got cut in a dirty place, then you’ll want to use a little soap
on that cut as well, and if the cut was dirty, you’ll need to consider how up to date your
tetanus injections are because if you haven’t had one in several years, then you’re going
to want to check with your doctor about that. But, if you just have a plain, regular cut,
then you’ve got the bleeding stopped, and you do that by applying pressure to the cut
and you use just a clean cloth. It doesn’t have to be sterile, or and it could be a four
by four, could be a kitchen paper towel or a washcloth and you hold that on there, and
it might take a minute or so for the bleeding to stop. Once the bleeding stopped, then go
ahead and take a band-aid and you’ll want to make sure that the band-aid is the right
size for the cut and just open that up and put it on. You don’t actually have to put
anything on a basic cut. Your body does a great job of healing itself. You might want
to put on an anti-biotic ointment. It’s okay to do that, but if it’s a small cut, if it’s
a clean cut, it probably isn’t actually required. I would more think about an anti-biotic ointment
if the cut was a little bit of, dirtier and if, maybe there gets some redness around it.
You want to change your bandage every day just partly to make sure you look at the cut,
and you also want to change the bandage if it gets wet. The two most important things
